Hello friends,
Welcome back to Sweet Things and the first newsletter since my new cookbook was published! It’s all been very exciting and last week in particular was a whirlwind of celebrations, interviews, a cheeky live appearance on ITV’s This Morning and an obligatory publication day visit to a central London bookshop to see if my book was on the shelves. *Spoiler*, it was!
I’ve loved seeing all the posts and Instagram stories of you receiving your books and already baking from it. So speedy, I love it. It’s also fascinating to see which recipes people are drawn to first - it’s never what I expect. There’s been a lot of love for the preserved lemon and olive oil cookies and the sweet and salty no bake cheesecake, both of which I love but just didn’t have down as frontrunners.
The actual day of publication was spent eating and drinking at a few places on my ever growing list. Stops included a fat slice of chocolate guinness cake at Grove Lane Deli in Camberwell, a spicy lunch at Kiln in Soho, cocktails at Swift and to round it all off, a stop at Bleecker for an insanely good burger collab with Melissa Thompson. I’ve always been a fan of Bleecker but Melissa’s burger was divine; loaded with scotch bonnet & thyme crispy cassava, green seasoning mayo, tamarind jam and American cheese. The most delicious day in many ways.
Tour Updates
I’m currently gearing up for my US visit which starts next week *eek!* - there are still some tickets for my event in NYC at 92nd Street Y on the 3rd May! Come down and let’s chat about dessert, baking, the cookbook writing process and everything else in between. You’ll also be able to purchase books and get them signed.
The Seattle event is sold out and you can still register for Portland here. For those in San Francisco, the event at Omnivore Books is first come first served!
For those based in the UK, I’ll be in CookBookBake in Brighton on the 16th May! Link to tickets is on the way but if you’re based around there then save the date! I’ll also be at Davids Bookshop in Letchworth Garden City on the 21st May for a talk and I’ll be bringing some dessert for you to try! London dates are on the way so watch this space!
Lastly, in other cookbook news, if you’d like to get your hands on a signed copy of I’ll Bring Dessert, then head over to DELLI. I’ve put together a fun baking box that includes a signed copy and some fabulous ingredients from independent makers. It all gets delivered to your door and makes for a really lovely gift.
Ok, on to the recipe! This week for paid subscribers, I’ve got a cracking recipe, (literally) for a muscovado crème brûlée. A crème brûlée is the King of custards and if I see it on a menu, I must order it. So silky and creamy with the best kind of bitter sugary crunch on top. This version is made with dark muscovado sugar for a toasty treacle like flavour that I’m a little obsessed with and I hope you will be too.
